I signed up for a pattern class at a local fabric store. I thought it was going to be a class about learning to make your own patterns from scratch. Not so. It was a sales pitch for the Lutterloh Pattern Drafting System (by Tru-Fit Patterns). I was caught a bit by surprise by that, but did enjoy it and the way of making patterns that fit did seem to work on the one demo that was done.I considered purchasing it until I looked through the book and found it all women's wear; much of it items I would probably not wear. Had I seen this 30 years ago, I might have considered it. I did purchase the curved rulers and the children's patterns and we were given a few basic women's patterns so that should be enough for me to give it a try.
A few things to note, if you go to this class:
On another note:
I have been a fan of Nancy Zieman (Sewing with Nancy) for quite some time. I have been intrigued by her method of adjusting patterns and tried it recently with a top. It seemed to work well, although I may need to readjust it further. I am hoping to try an experiment soon. I would like to take a pants pattern, similar to the one received at the above mentioned class, and do the adjustments the way Nancy describes in her book, Fitting Finesse, and compare the two and see which fits better. If I get to that, I will post results.
Happy Sewing!
A few things to note, if you go to this class:
- The salesman makes it sound like you are getting a real break on the price because you are at a class. That is not so. I checked the websites and found the same prices listed there. I did not find anywhere the items were listed with the "regular" price on the list. The only advantage to buying at the class is that you save the shipping and handling fees.
- While the pattern system works great for making clothing that fits many body types and variations, it does not take into consideration height. So additional adjustments may be needed after creating the base pattern.
